To be eligible to get your Hawaii Real Estate Salesperson License you must:
Students are required to:
Students also need to find a brokerage with which to “park” their license. Licensees must pay for application fees and licensing fees. Once you have sent your completed paperwork into the
Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs (DCCA) it may take 3-4 weeks for your
applications to be reviewed and approved.
The Hawaii Real Estate License is a statewide license. Students from any island can take the
course and the state exam is the same for students regardless of where the student resides. In
addition, the license is good state-wide meaning you may conduct business throughout the state.
What is it like taking the State Licensing Exam?
The exam has two parts, the "National" portion covering general real estate principles and practices and the "State" portion dealing with specific Hawaii statutes. The exam consists of multiple choice questions only. Each section of the exam is graded separately and requires a passing score of 70% each (75% for Broker Exam). Candidates that fail either portion of the exam may retake the exam and need only retake the part of the exam failed. Students will receive a detailed outline of what topics are on the exam, as well as step by step instructions on how to register with their course materials (Cost is $61.00 for the exam).
What is the process to take the class?
We will be using 2 books for this class. One is for the National Section and the other is for the Hawaii State Section. The National Book has 24 Chapters while the Hawaii State has 9 Chapters.
Learn the material. You must read all the chapters to complete all lessons and take the test at the end of each lesson. The modules are timed. You must complete all the chapters of the online course work. If you have chosen the Instructor Led Series, this includes Instructor led Zoom classes. Your Instructor will provide an overview of the topics, discussion, and answer your questions. Please have your video ON and your mic muted (except when you want to speak of course to ask questions/ join in the discussions). You will have a better experience and better engagement with your video on, if you need to turn it off momentarily, please do so, and then turn it back on when you're ready. In addition to the reading material and the zoom classes, there is also a library of keywords and videos with further instruction about the different subjects of real estate.
Pass the School Course. In addition to attending the live video lessons, students must ALSO take the online quizzes as their homework (pass/fail). The quizzes are pass/fail but they are REQUIRED. You will also need to score a 70% on your Final Exam to pass the course and receive your certificate. You can retake them at no additional cost (if needed). It is important to use your calendar to schedule your zoom class time and your study time. Having a schedule is one of the most important tools in your real estate career. Your study schedule will keep you on track. Stay focused on your goal and stick with the program. The material and instruction you receive will help you learn - but only if you use them. Make your study schedule and stick to it. If you miss a day of studying, make it up.
Please email realestatecafe808@gmail.com when you’ve completed the course ( when you have read all the chapters and have passed all the quizzes and also the class final exam) and have created your account in the state website https://mypvl.dcca.hawaii.gov/. Note: When creating your account on the state website you MUST use the same full name that shows on your state issued ID. If you do not, the PSI testing center will not accept your certificate of course completion. NOTE: Certificates will be issued once I receive confirmation that you have completed the required hours and completed your tests. Please allow up to 7 days to receive your certificate. Please print it to show the proctor at your state exam. If you need your certificate rushed to you before the 7 days, there’s a $50 fee to expedite the certificate (24 hours required). Otherwise, no additional fee is required. You can register for your PSI exam without the certificate, however you need to show it at the time you take your exam. To get your certificate, you must create a login in the State of Hawaii's website so we can create your certificate for you, and it will also show you passed on the back-end in the State of Hawaii system for when they verify info to issue your license. NOTE: The Real Estate Cafe reserves the right, in the unlikely event, to require the withdrawal at any time of any student who practices academic dishonesty, or who, in the judgment of the school, is not respectful to the instructor or other students, who interferes with the attempts of other students to learn, or who threatens or otherwise intimidates any student or instructor in any way. No refunds will be provided in such a case.
Pass your State Exam (PSI is the company that gives the state exam - $63). You will need to show your certificate to PSI or they won't allow you to take the exam. You don't need to register right away - but here is the site when you're ready for your next step. https://www.psiexams.com/
Allow yourself time for the state exam. The state exam is in 2 parts. It is a timed test: Real Estate Salesperson - National (150 minutes) - HI Real Estate Salesperson - State (90 minutes) The exam consists of multiple-choice questions only.
Each section of the exam is graded separately and requires a passing score of 70% each. (75% for Broker Exam). Students may retake the exam if needed and only retake the portion they didn’t pass. If you need to retake any part, you will have to register and pay again for the test. See the PSI Handout for more info on your exam, an outline of what topics are on the exam, and a step-by-step guide on how to register.
You will need to find The Real Estate Cafe in the dropdown menu when you sign up. You can take the PSI exam at a testing center or from home. The PSI website shows the locations of testing centers in Hawaii.
Fill out your Application with the State of Hawaii! (may take 3-4 weeks to process). You will get your application from PSI after you pass your state exam.
After passing your state exam (PSI Exam), you can interview with various brokerages. You will need to note which brokerage you are joining with on your application. Reach out if you need any help connecting with brokerages. You will fill out and mail in your Application for Licensure. The State of Hawaii takes 3-4 weeks to review your application. Once approved, you can begin your new career!
Finally, you will attend the New Agent Training at your brokerage where you will learn the strategies of how to get listings, work with buyers and best practices for success from your broker.
It is the Brokerage’s responsibility to provide training for you. Many Local Real Estate Boards give classes as well as the Escrow Companies. Take advantage of any and all training you can get. The more knowledge you have the better. Don’t let yourself get left out and get discouraged. You have worked hard to get your license. Make it work for you.
